STARGRAZER
for Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, the first human in space
in celebration of the voyage of the spacecraft Vostok on 12 April 1961
Mark this: handprint, on cave wall, Lascaux.
The journey has been long, from the day we crawled
out from under the sky to cower in caverns.
What did the night skies bring that terrified us so?
Flaming bolides across the darkened arch of heaven,
smashing into subliminal depths of species memory?
Why did we abandon the savannah of grass and sun and moon and stars?
